ANDRES ROOTS – Winter / Roots Art Records, 2016 / CD / blues / Estonia
Krajem 2006. godine slide gitarista, kompozitor i vođa benda iz grada Tartu, Estonija, Andres Roots, obilježava 20 godina svojih nastupa na turnejama. Kombinacija pre-rock zvuka i uticaja rocka 1960-tih, omogućava njegovoj muzici javno emitovanje na pet kontinenata. Povremeno je svojom muzikom uključen u raznim fimovima ili TV emisijama, a bio je dijelom i nagrađivanog (Estonia / Latvia / Belarusia) filma “Lonely Island” (2012), režisera sa nagradom Berlinksog festivala – Peeter Simma.
Pored nastupa u Estoniji, Roots je imao turneje u Velikoj Britaniji, Francuskoj, Njemačkoj, Češkoj Republici, Slovačkoj, Poljskoj, Litvaniji, Latviji, Švedskoj i Finskoj, a svirao je uz velika muzička imena kao što su Honeyboy Edwards (USA) i Tuomari Nurmio (FIN), a otvarao je koncerte izvođačima poput Dr. Feelgood (UK) i Otis Grand (USA).
Najviše mu odgovara da svira u formi dueta i to kao Andres Roots & Raul Terep koji “ističe njegovu odličnu slide tehniku sviranja kompletiranu sa bogatim akordima i simultanim sviranjem bass linija” (Sirp), čime “uz pomoć bubnja i jedne gitare gradi zvuk snažniji nego ga pravi neki prosječni rock band” (IDeeJazz). Roots nastupa i solistički, a ima saradnju i sa usnim harmonikašima, Ismo Haavisto (FIN) i Steve Lury (UK), kreirajući tradicionalni blues zvuk. Godine 2015., Roots & Terep Trad.alt.winter turneja u press materijalima Estonije, Finske i Švedske opisala je bivšeg gitaristu benda Bullfrog Brown (Andres Rootsa) kao “kralja estonskog bluesa“.
“Winter” je Andresov prvi studijski album nakon albuma “Three!” izdatog 2013. godine. Na novom albumu, “Winter“, uz njega svira i nekoliko gostiju koji kompletiraju studijsku ekipu: vokali – Bert Deivert, Howard Fishman i James Dalton, svi iz USA, Richard Townend, Steve Lury i Louie Digman, svi iz UK, Ismo Haavisto iz Finske, Lorete Medne iz Latvije i Mikk Tammepold iz Estonije ; trubač – Edgars Galzons iz Latvije ; bubnjari – Raul Terep i Andres Mikk, oba iz Estonije ; bassist – Peeter Piik iz Estonije.
Oni koji malo češće prate sadržaje web portala Barikada – World of Music već dobro znaju za blues muzičara svjetske klase, Estonca, Andres Rootsa. Već i iz njegove skraćene biografije, date u prethodnom tekstu, vidljivo je da se on čvrsto ustoličio na blues sceni Europe. To je najviše postigao zahvaljujući kvaliteti svog rada – a to je – autorski blues. Da, svih 13 kompozicija na albumu “Winter” u potpisu autora nose njegovo ime.
Naslov novog albuma Andres Rootsa je “Winter“, što asocira na hladnoću, ali on zrači neophodnom toplinom koju donose kompozicije u njegovom sadržaju. Ono što Andres Roots dobro radi, pored sviranja, naravno, je iznalaženje prave mjere između instrumentalnih i vokalnih dijelova u svojim kompozicijama. Oba ova segmenta imaju podjednaku važnost. Vokalni i instrumentalni segmenti obogačeni su učešćem mnogih gostiju. Svaki od njih je donio svoj lični pečat što je samo poboljšalo finalni proizvod.
Iskreni poklonici bluesa neće ovom albumu naći ni jednu zamjerku. Iako je i do sada Andres Roots uvijek bio na visini zadatka, usudim se reći da je ovim albumom nadmašio sve do sada urađeno. Neću reći da je Andres dostigao svoj maksimum, ali je samom sebi sada postavio visoko dignutu ljestvicu kvaliteta. Vjerujući u njega kao odličnog muzičara i autora, siguran sam da nas od Andresa čeka još mnogo prijatnih iznenađenja. Samo naprijed, Andres.
Celebrating 20 years as a touring musician in 2016, Andres Roots is a slide guitarist, songwriter and bandleader based in Tartu, Estonia. Combining pre-rock blues sounds with swing and 1960’s rock influences, his music continues to receive airplay on five continents and has been frequently featured in cinema and television, including the award-winning Estonian / Latvian / Belarusian film “Lonely Island” (2012), directed by the Berlinale-decorated Peeter Simm.
In addition to his native Estonia, Roots has toured in the UK, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden and Finland, played with Honeyboy Edwards (USA) and Tuomari Nurmio (FIN), and opened for the likes of Dr. Feelgood (UK) and Otis Grand (USA).
Preferring the duo format of Andres Roots & Raul Terep that highlights his “excellent slide technique complimented by great chording and simultaneously executed skillful basslines” (Sirp), with “the sound made with just drums and one guitar filling the stage more powerfully than your average rock band” (IDeeJazz), Roots also performs solo and continues to collaborate with harpists Ismo Haavisto (FIN) and Steve Lury (UK) in a more traditional blues vein. The 2015 Roots & Terep Trad.alt.winter Tour saw the press in Estonia, Finland and Sweden greet the former Bullfrog Brown guitarist as “the king of Estonian blues“.
“Winter” is Estonian slide guitarist Andres Roots’ first full-length studio CD since 2013’s “Three!” and features an international array of guest vocalists: Bert Deivert, Howard Fishman and James Dalton from the USA, Richard Townend, Steve Lury and Louie Digman from the UK, Ismo Haavisto from Finland, Lorete Medne from Latvia, and Mikk Tammepold from Estonia. Latvian tuba-player Edgars Galzons and Estonian drummers Raul Terep and Andres Mikk and bassist Peeter Piik complete the studio line-up.
Those who a little more likely follow the contents of the web portal Barikada – World of Music already well known for the world-class blues musician, Estonian, Andres Roots. Even in his abbreviated biography, presented above, it is clear that he firmly established himself in the blues scene in Europe. This is the highest achieved thanks to the quality of his work – and it is – author blues. Yes, all the 13 compositions on the album “Winter” are signed by the author, bearing his name.
The title of the new album Andres Roots, “Winter“, which is associated with coldness, but its radiates the necessary heat by bringing the composition in its content. What Andres Roots works well, in addition to playing, of course, is finding the right reasonable degree between instrumental and vocal parts in his compositions. Both segments being equally authentic. Vocal and instrumental segments are enriched with the participation of many guests. Each of them brought a personal touch that is only improved the final product.
Sincere fans of the blues will not find any objection to this album. Although up to now Andres Roots always have been up to the task, I dare to say that this album surpassed all been done so far. I will not say that Andres peaked or that he set itself now high boot scale of quality. Believing in him as the great musician and author, I an sure that we can expect a plenty more pleasant surprises from Andres. Go ahead, Andres.
