STEVE LURY & ANDRES ROOTS – Live In Lerwick / Roots Art Records, 2014 / CD / Blues / United Kingdom – Estonia
Nisu mu strane razne tehnike sviranja bluesa i on ih sa podjednakim uspjehom i ovdje koristi.
Sometimes the East and West were confronted each other. With the fall of the “iron curtain” everything changed, for the better, of course. The music was the easiest way to overcome previous differences. We note since then various and numerous cooperation. In the case of the album, Steve Lury & Andres Roots – “Live in Lerwick” – we have an example of how cooperation between East and West can be excellent. Steve Lury, singer and harp player comes from a country United Kingdom, and Andres Roots, blues guitarist, comes from the state of Estonia.
Steve Lury & Andres Roots, “Live in Lerwick”, an album that was recorded live during the 10th Shetland Blues Festival held in Mareel in Lerwick, Shetland, UK (September 2013). The lineup that occurred there and that you can hear on the CD consisted of Steve Lury – vocals, harmonica ; Andres Roots – guitar ; Peeter Piik – bass and Paul Archibald – drums. The evening they performed was called Muddy Waters Night.
The songs on the album, are the blues traditional’s conglomerate. One of the songs, instrumental, “Build Me A Statue”, is signed by Andres Roots. Other are signed by the giants of the blues scene – Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Tampa Red, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Robert Johnson and a few others.
Harmonica is in the foreground. Guitar is here to fill in all the “empty” spaces, and the rhythm section is tight on its task. Since this is a live album, it must be mentioned the audience that not only reward the musicians played, at the end of the song, audience often did it during their performances. Steve Lury won most of the tasks to do during the concert evening – he played the harmonica, sang, communicated with the audience. In all of these tasks – he was excellent.
Andres Roots, is the biggest name of blues music in Estonia, and well beyond. That he is a world-class artist, he showed it on this album. too. He did it utilizing various techniques of playing the blues on his guitar. He applied them with equal success and here – on this CD. I would like this review to encourage you to try and find ways to listen to this album – you will not regret it.
