    TangOstinato – Via della gioia

    TangOstinato – Via della gioia

TangOstinato – Via della gioia / CD Baby, 2018 / CD, digital / nuevo tango, jazz tango / Italija

TangOstinato is the latest music project designed and created by two young gifted Italian musicians, pianist Luca Aletta and double bass player Stefano Cardillo. An ambitious and brilliant work, where music leaves room for the unmistakable sensuality of tango. A blend of Astor Piazzolla’s nuevo tango and jazz tango creates a passionate and rhythmic “hue” that communicates an original and intense “touch” to the listener. Pieces originally written by Aletta and Cardillo alternate with traditional tangos rearranged to present taste such as “La cumparsita” or “Besame mucho“, just to mention a few. Astor Piazzolla, father of nuevo tango, is a constant presence in TangOstinato: the duo has reinterpreted several famous compositions by the Argentine maestro always in a personal and musically original way. Their sound combines characteristic jazz sonorities with distorted chords, rhythms recalling African music, improvisation, but also European music elements: a focus on dynamics, counterpoint and Italian style melodies. TangOstinato duo is always moving on the borderline between jazz and cultured European music.

Aletta and Cardillo’s work is enriched by the contribution of other outstanding musicians: Tuscan clarinettist Nico Gori, one of the most important representatives of Italian jazz; Palermitan Giuseppe Milici, one of the best harmonica players in Europe; Sicilian oboist Giovanni Di Mauro, most appreciated in Italy. Last but not least, Fabio Tiralongo, a young and promising jazz saxophonist.

TangOstinato duo has published two records so far. The first one, “TangOstinato with Nico Gori“, was released in April 2015 and has attracted public and critical acclaim. The album has been played on radio and has received many positive reviews in Italy and abroad. The second work, “Via della gioia” (“The way of joy“), was released in March 2018 and features Milici, Gori, Di Mauro and drummer Alessandro Borgia. The TangOstinato has performed in many important national and international events, among which “Sibiu Jazz Festival 2016“, “Ploiesti Jazz Festival 2017” and “Petrovac Jazz Festival 2019“, certainly deserve a mention.

U argentinskom tangu se pokazuju suprotnosti – muško-žensko, čvrsto-mekano, grubo-sentimentalno, a najčešće ga prati muzika violine, gitare, kontrabasa, klavira i bandoneona. (Wikipedia). Ti “kontrasti” očigledni su i u muzici koju nam donose TangOstinato.

Album “Via della gioia” sadrži 12 kompozicija u originalnim aranžmanima. TangOstinato na perfektan način kombinuju tango, jazz i klasičnu muziku uz moderni bubnjarski groove. Pridodati zvuci klarineta i harmonike generiraju pomalo čudne i divne boje.

U ovih 12 kompozicija nema “ponavljnja“.

Jazz is a musical direction that is played all over the world. The fact that we do not have information that it is played in some area does not mean that he does not exist there. This dispersion of jazz has led him to take on different parts of the world “impurities“. This, in a way, enriched him, gave him some new qualities and dimensions.

The Italian duo TangOstinato, intensified by a number of regular musicians, enriched their interpretation of jazz with tango influences. Tango dance originated in South America, in the 18th century, with a combination of elements of black dance and Spanish melody. The birthplace of true tango, is on the west coast of La Plate, Buenos Aires, which is why we call it “Argentine Tango“. In Argentine Tango, opposites are shown – male-female, firm-soft, gross-sentimental, and it is most often accompanied by the music of violin, guitar, double bass, piano and bandoneon. (Wikipedia). These “contrasts” are also apparent in the music TangOstinato brings to us.

Album “Via della gioia” contains 12 songs in original arrangements. New sound in this second work: a perfect mixing of Tango, Jazz, Classical Music and modern drum grooves. The paste of clarinet and harmonica generates some strange and wonderful colours.

The performance of this team at the “Petrovac Jazz Festival 2019“, this summer, was enough to get me interested in their work. Fortunately, without any hesitation, they provided me with their current album release. Arrangers, Luca Aletta and Stefano Cardillo, at expertly utilized the rich sound of the various instruments at their disposal and gave a rich and unusual sound image enriched by changes in rhythm and dynamics. There are no “repetitions” in these 12 compositions.

Already famous compositions – “Libertango“, “The Godfather Theme“, “Araucanos“, “Ave Maria“, “Blue Bosa” – have been given a whole new “outfit“. In doing so, Luca Aletta, Stefano Cardillo and their crew have made it clear that they have long mastered a musical term called jazz, that they can successfully vary its basic elements, and thus express themselves in their own original way. I expect new discography of these valuable Italians to follow, and even more beautiful music will come from the land of the Apennines.
