TOM RIEPL – Play / TomTone Records – In Sync Music co-production, 2012 / CD / blues, jazz, rock / Germany, USA

U priodu od 01.06.2004. (001) do 25.03.2008. (197) uređivao sam i vodio serijal muzičko-informativnih radijskih emisija – Jeans generacija – emitovanih svakog utorka putem talasa Radio Tuzle i direktnim Internet prenosom. Sve u svemu – u tih 197 radijskih emisija serijala Jeans generacija – predstavio sam više od 2,000 raznih solista / bendova iz cijelog svijeta. Danas, sa ove vremenske distance, mogu reći da su neki od predstavljenih muzičara u međuvremenu umrli, nekima muzika više nije primarni životni interes, a neki su i danas postojano na braniku dobre muzike. Jedan od onih koji ne odustaju je i čovjek o kojem danas pišem – Tom Riepl.

Muzika koju svira Tom Riepl predstavljena je u dvije radijske emisije naprijed pomenutog serijala: Jeans generacija br. 56 (28.06.2005. godine) i Jeans generacija br. 102 (16.05.2006. godine), kao i na web portalu Barikada – World of Music – u dva navrata – Tom Riepl, Interview i Tom Riepl, Radio Moonlight Presentation.

Tom Riepl je iskusan gitarist koji je dobro poznat po vještini improvizacije, po boji tona i individualnom stilu koji se može opisati kao zanimljiva mješavina raznih muzičkih stilova kao što su blues, rock, jazz i TV soundtracka. On radi kao session muzičar, kao član raznih postava i kao redoviti kolumnist za razne gitarske časopise. Može se pohvaliti sa 7 instrumentalnih solo albuma koje ima “pod pojasom”… Inače, Tom Riepl je Njemac, dolazi iz okoline Minhena, Njemačka. Tomov zadnji album, “Play”, većinom je snimljen “uživo u studiju”, u američkim gradovima Mobile (Alabama) i Los Angeles (California), a uključuje učešće mnogih muzičara visokog profila. Kao specijalni gosti na albumu “Play” pojavljuju se Lauren Turner (American Idol finalist) ; Lee Ritenour (gitarska legenda i dobitnik nagrade Grammy) ; Huey Lewis (Multi-platinum recording artist, dobitnik nagrade Grammy i nominovan za nagradu Academy). Album “Play” producirao je Rick Hirsch (Multi-platinum recording artist koji je sarađivao s imenima poput Wet Willie, Gregg Allman Band, Joan Armatrading, Bonnie Raitt i sa mnogim drugima).

Čitajući informacije sa omota albuma i iz priloženog bookleta, saznavajući značajna imena sa kojima je satrađivao Tom Riepl, a poznavajući i kvalitet Tom Riepla, bilo je jasno da se radi o izuzetno vrijednom zvučnom zapisu. Preslušavanje samog albuma je to nedvojbeno i potvrdilo. Bogati aranžmani, brojna ekipa vrhunskih muzičara, za dobru svirku raspoloženi Tom Riepl, to su samo potvrdili. Album ima 12 kompozicija. Tom Riepl je autor njih 10, a 2 su napisali drugi autori. Uglavnom, riječ je o instrumentalima uz nekoliko kompozicija sa vokalnom pratnjom. Na ovom mjestu bih okuražio Toma da ubuduće ima što više kompozicija sa vokalom. Na ovom albumu kompozicije sa vokalom su se pokazali kao svijetle tačke cijelog ovog projekta

Iako je Tom Riepl Europljanin, album “Play” ima američki prizvuk. Doprinosa tome je dala američka ekipa muzičara, kao i producent, Amerikanac. Ovu konstataciju treba uzeti mojim pozitivnim stavom.

Gitare, saksofoni, klavijature, uz čvrstu ritam sekciju daju dobru osnovu za kvalitetnu svirku. Tu priliku su Tom Riepl i njegovi saradnici iskoristili na najbolji mogući način. Muzici sa albuma “Play” ni protok vremena ne može nauditi. Ona ostaje kao dokument zdrave i kvalitetne svirke muzičara iz samog vrha svjetske muzičke produkcije.

In the period since June 1, 2004 (001) up to March 25, 2008 (197) edited and led by himself a series of music and news radio shows – Jeans Generation – broadcasted every Tuesday through waves of Radio Tuzla and direct Internet transmission. All in all – in these 197 radio shows of mentioned Jeans Generation – I introduced more than 2,000 different soloists / bands from around the world. Today, with hindsight, I can say that some of the featured musicians in the meantime died, for some of them the music is no longer the primary life interests, and some are still resistant to the bumper of good music. One of those who do not give up is the man about which I’m writing today – Tom Riepl.

Music played by Tom Riepl was presented in two radio editions of the above mentioned radio show: Jeans Generation – no. 56 (June 28, 2005) and Jeans Generation – no. 102 (May 16, 2006) as well as on the web portal Barikada – World of Music – on two occasions – Tom Riepl, Interview and Tom Riepl, Radio Moonlight Presentation.

Tom Riepl is a seasoned guitarist who is well-known for his improvisation skills, tone and an individual style which can be described as an engaging mixture of Blues, Rock, Jazz and TV-Show soundtrack. He works as a session player and sideman as well as a regular columnist for a guitar magazines. As a recording artist he has 7 instrumental solo albums under the belt… Otherwise, Tom Riepl is German, comes from the vicinity of Munich, Germany. By reading the information from the album cover and from the enclosed booklet, finding out important names with whom Tom Riepl cooperated, and knowing the quality of Tom Riepl by himself, it was immediately clear that this should be a very worth material. Listening to the album, it is undoubtedly confirmed. Rich arrangements, team of top musicians, Tom Riepl in the mood for good performance, it only confirmed.

The album has 12 compositions. Tom Riepl is the author of 10 of them and 2 were written by other authors. Mostly, there are instrumentals with a few compositions with vocal accompaniment. At this point, I would like to encouraged Tom to compose more compositions with vocals (in the future). On this album compositions with vocals proved to be a bright point of the whole project.

Although Tom Riepl is European, album “Play” has American overtones. The contribution to it has been given by the US team of musicians, and the producer, an American, too. This observation should be taken as my positive attitude.

Guitars, saxophones, keyboards, with a solid rhythm section provide a good basis for a quality music show. That chance Tom Riepl and his colleagues used in the best possible way. To the music from the album “Play” even the passage of time can not hurt. It remains as a document of healthy and high-quality performances of musicians from the very top of the world of music production.
